All You Need to Know About Coffee Beans
How our Coffee Beans are Processed.
Coffee beans go through several stages before they reach our cup.
Cultivation and Harvesting:
- Coffee plants grow best in tropical climates, primarily in regions known as the “Coffee Belt” (South America, Africa, and Asia).
- The two main species are Arabica (higher quality, smoother taste) and Robusta (stronger, more bitter)
- Coffee trees take about 3-4 years to bear fruit, which are called cherries.
- Harvesting is done manually (hand-picking) or mechanically when cherries are ripe.
Processing Coffee Cherries
Once harvested, cherries need to be processed to extract the beans inside. There are two main methods:
Wet (Washed) Process
- Cherries are pulped (outer skin removed) fermented, washed and then dried.
- Produces a clean, bright flavor.
Dry (Natural) Process:
- Cherries are sun dried to about 10-12% moisture content on drying beds or patios under the sun or using mechanical dryers.
Milling & Sorting
- The dried beans are roasted at high temperatures (180-240 C / 356-464 F) to develop flavors.
The roast level affects the taste:
- Light Roast – Bright, acidic, retains original flavors.
- Medium Roast – Balanced acidity, body, and aroma.
- Dark Roast – Bold, smoky, and less acidic.

Brewing
- Coffee is brewed using different methods like espresso machines, drip coffee makers, French presses, pour-over, or AeroPress.
How To Store Coffee Beans Properly
To preserve the flavor and freshness, coffee beans must be stored correctly.
Best Storage Practices.
Keep away from air, moisture, heat, and light:
- Store in an airtight, opaque container at room temperature.
- Avoid plastic or glass jars unless they are UV-protected.
Use a Cool Dark Place.
- A pantry or a cabinet away from sunlight and heat sources (like ovens or stoves) is ideal.
- Avoid storing in the fridge or freezer, as moisture can cause beans to degrade.
Buy Whole Beans & Grind Fresh.
- Ground coffee loses its freshness much faster than whole beans.
- Grind only what you need for immediate use.
Use within 2-4 Weeks of Roasting.
- Freshly roasted coffee is best consumed within a few weeks.
- If buying in bulk, Divide into smaller portions and store separately.
Vacuum-Sealed or Nitrogen-Flushed Packaging.
- If buying from a roaster, opt for nitrogen-flushed vacuum-sealed bags to extend freshness.
